Medical Staffing Analysis

Hospital Employees
MSA: Text

BACKGROUND

The MSA (Medical Staffing Agency) is a fictional company that needs help in temporarily placing workers for the upcoming 2018 Influenza Season.

The agency determines when to send staff and how many to each State.

MOTIVATION

The United States has an influenza season where more people than usual suffer from the flu. Some people, particularly vulnerable populations, develop severe complications and end up in the hospital. Hospitals and clinics need additional staff to adequately treat these extra patients. The medical staffing agency provides this temporary staff.

The agency covers all hospitals in each 50 States in the USA, and the project will plan for the upcoming influenza season

DATA

The following data set covering influenza in the USA were used during the project:

•Influenza deaths by geography, time, age and gender , Source: CDC

•Population data by geography. Source: US Census Bureau

•Count of influenza laboratory test result by state and Influenza visit (survey). Source: CDC (Fluview)

•Survey of flu shot rates in children , Source: CDC

Deeper look on the number of death

After cleaning and manipulating the dataset, I decided to first analyze the total death due to Influenza on a year-to-year basis and categorize the deaths by age group on our data set.

Testing our hypothesis & Spatial Analysis

After defining which age group is most vulnerable to influenza, I have decided to test the hypothesis, which later was confirmed with a correlation coefficient (r): 0,965 - strong.

Furthermore, I made a spatial analysis to give us a clearer insight into each state.

Analyzing the data

INFLUENZA DEATH RATE

Based on our prediction, the influenza death rate will remain stable for the next influenza season.

The vulnerable population has been defined as people older than 65 years old - this particular age group has a significantly higher mortality rate.

STAFF ALLOCATION

73% of the total influenza death were counted in the Top 15 States with the highest number of vulnerable populations.

More Staff and Personal will be needed for the Top 15 States with the highest number of vulnerable population.

PREVENTIVE MEASURE

Boost preventive measures (Flu Shots) in the summer months  especially for the vulnerable population age group.

1:4 Nurse – Patient ratio should be implemented through the influenza season, states with higher ration should be supported from another state with lower ratio.
